The term "engram" was coined by the biologist, Richard Wolfgang Semon (1859-1918). His definition (1908) was to describe how memory traces are stored and how they are recalled.

L. Ron Hubbard (1911-1956) used the word and concept in his development of Dianetics (Scientology) but added the definition "a mental image picture of a moment of pain and unconsciousness."[1]

The use of the term here, is to describe a visual idea: to show how a memory (photograph) is altered by recall: that it is not fixed or stationary; and how memories (photographs) trigger other memories (photographs).

In practice, these works also function as records of a daily visual diary. It should be noted that these images should be looked at as pairs but not necessarily as diptychs.
